What is an Autism Waiver?

Autism Waiver (AW) is a program that provides community-based, long-term, client-centered therapeutic services and support to children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which enables home and community living as an alternative to institutional care.

Who Should Apply?

Children with autism residing in Maryland, ages 2 through 21, require an Intermediate Care Facility for the Intellectually Disabled (ICF-ID) level of care.

Eligibility Guidelines

Medical and Technical Criteria

  • Individuals must be certified as needing services from an ICF-ID.
  • Must have an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) or Individualized Education Program (IEP) with 15 hours of special education and related services
  • Must be able to be served in the home and community with Autism Waiver services
  • Must meet additional Autism Waiver medical and technical eligibility criteria

Financial Criteria

  • An individual’s income and assets are reviewed to determine financial eligibility for Medical Assistance.
  • The child’s monthly income may not exceed 300% of SSI benefits, and the countable assets may not exceed $2,000 or $2500 (depending on eligibility category)
